FHE Lesson – Overview of the Book of Mormon

Present the following:

Then ask the kids to pick one story to focus on.

– Provide them with drawing supplies and ask them to draw what they hear as I read the story that they have selected.

At the end of the reading, ask the kids to share what they have drawn and why they drew what they did.

Finish by sharing your testimony of the Book of Mormon, when you came to know it was true, how it has blessed you since then.

FHE Courage

What is courage?

Courage – To not be afraid, especially of doing what is right.

Four Examples of Courage:

Who am I?

  • Nephi returns to get the brass plates.
  • Ammon goes to the Lamanites to preach the Gospel.
  • Moroni wandered in the wilderness because he would not deny the Christ.
  • Daniel faces the Lion’s Den because he refused to stop worshiping his God.

What do we need courage for? Can You think of an example when you had courage?

  • to do what is right when others are doing what is wrong.
  • to keep the commandments even when we don’t know what will happen by so doing.
  • to follow the prophet’s counsel even when its difficult or seems irrelevant.

What words do you hear in the word gratitude? Attitude and grateful.

President Joseph F. Smith said that ingratitude is the great sin of our day.

Gratitude is to expressly acknowledge God’s blessing in our lives.

When I’m reading scriptures, I like to look for the promised blessings and then assess whether or not I am doing the thing which is required to obtain the blessing.

Read D&C 78:19

When we pray, Jesus has taught us to be thankful first, and to express our thanks to God in our prayers. Why do you think that to always start our prayers with expressions of gratitude?

The story of the ten lepers. Luke 17

How did, or what did the leper do who showed gratitude? He gave praise to God.

(Have the kids take turns reading the verses outloud).

Have the kids talk about something that is important to them.  How can they show gratitude for that important thing?

FHE – Natural Man, Spiritual Rebirth

Jesus said, “Ye must be born again.”

Alma said, “have ye spiritually been born of God?”

King Benjamin said, “the natural man is an enemy to God” (Mosiah 3:19)

And behold, when that time cometh, none shall be found blameless before God, except it be little children, only through repentance and faith on the name of the Lord God Omnipotent. (vs. 21)

Draw a simple diagram:

We came from heaven, we are here now as natural men and women, we want to come back to heaven.

We’re already here: Selfish, mean, violent, and prideful. This is the natural man. We suffer from center-of-the-universe syndrome. Look at me.

Where do we want to go? Back Home.

How do we get there? We cross the bridge of Faith (We exercise faith in Jesus Christ.)

  • Faith in the words of the prophets.
  • Repentance.  (Tread lightly on this, sometime we commit sin that is wrong. But sometime we make mistakes, because of things we didn’t know were wrong at the time we did them, or sometimes we’ve done nothing wrong at all, but we feel like we have because we’re the victim of someone else’s sins. But we still feel really bad, and trapped like there is no way to fix what was broken. That’s not really sin, and so we don’t really need to repent of that. But the problem here is that it can keep us from feeling God’s love. So what is the answer?
  • Christ is the answer for it all.

How do we know if we’ve be born again?

  • No more desire to do evil.
  • Your hearts are changed.
  • You only want to do good and think good thoughts.

Here’s the kicker: After 8 years old, there is no age limit for when you can begin to exercise faith in Christ.  You can decide to begin to cross that bridge at any age.

Once we’ve crossed over, then we begin the real work and real purpose of our existence: Character development.  Perhaps that is a lesson for another time…

FHE – The Sabbath Day

Yesterday was actually a good day for Sabbath Day observance, everyone did at least two or three things that helped them to keep the Sabbath Day holy.

Emma – Went to Church, she got the LDS Youth App on her Ipod, and she spent time with the family in the evening.

Aaron – Also spent time with the family in the evening yesterday, he listened to a couple of conference talks in the morning, and he also wrote and sent an email to friend.

Dallin – Went about being a secret sibling yesterday evening, he also listened to conference talks by the prophet, and he began learning some church songs on the piano.

Joseph – Helped others to make a cake for the family, he listened to Dad read from the Book of Mormon at the end of the day, and looking at family photos yesterday.

Jacob – Was also very excited with his challenge to be a secret sibling, he gave the article of faith for primary yesterday, and he participated in the Family History activity where we asked questions of Uncle Tom about his childhood.

It’s not hard to keep the Sabbath Day holy,

Sign: “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.”

Meaning: Sabbath = Hebrew for Rest

Purpose: to rest from our Labors and to worship God.

Creation story – 6 days, or periods of time, God created the earth. On the 7th day he rested.

History: The Sabbath Day use to be on Saturday.

Sabbath was a sign to the Children of Israel that they were God’s covenant people.

Up until his Resurrection, Jesus and his disciples honored the seventh day as the Sabbath day. But after the Resurrection, it was switched to Sunday to remember the Resurrection on that day.

How to Keep the Sabbath Day Holy?

– Do the things that God asked us to do, such as:

  • attend church,
  • reading scripture and word of church leaders
  • visit the sick, aged, and loved ones
  • Listen to uplifting muic
  • Pray to Heavenly Father
  • Work on Family History
  • Tell stories that promote faith
  • sharing our testimonies and spiritual experiences with each other
  • Writing letters to missionaries or family
  • Fasting
  • Share time with children and family in the home.

Why? Blessings of the Sabbath:

The fulness of the earth will be ours! Prosperity in all its forms is the blessing of the Sabbath day.

FHE – Receiving a Testimony of Light

– watch and discuss the video at the beginnings of the link:

  • What did people use to think?
  • What do we know now?
  • What changed between belief and knowledge?

– Pretend we went back in time 130 years. Take turns describing the following inventions/technologies:

  • Jumbo Jet Airplane
  • Microwave
  • Smart Phone
  • Pinterest
  • Google or Facebook

It can be hard for us to believe what we cannot see. The same is true with our Spirits.

We have to have the right instruments:

Scientists had a hard time believing that there were more galaxies beyond our own until they had the right tools to see.

The Apostle Paul taught a parallel principle regarding spiritual knowledge. “The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God,” he wrote to the Corinthians, “for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”12

In other words, if you want to recognize spiritual truth, you have to use the right instruments. You can’t come to an understanding of spiritual truth with instruments that are unable to detect it.

How to obtain spiritual truth and light:

  1.  Read the scriptures
  2. Ponder on the goodness of God, from Adam until now.
  3. Ask God with the intention to obey.
  4. Do the things that God is asking you to do.

FHE – Obedience

Obedience is the first law of heaven.

Separate the phrase:

Write “The first law of heaven.”

Ask “What is the first law of heaven.”

God: Love, Faith, Truth, Obedience

Devil: Hate, Fear, Lies, Disobedience

If we want to feel stronger love, we need to to be obedient to God’s commandments.

What is one of the biggest lies that the devil tells? I don’t exist at all. Neither does God. This is the lie that most of the modern world believes today. It doesn’t matter what you do, because no one is in charge. There are no commandments and you can be happy doing what ever you want, when ever you want, however you want. There is no sin, because I don’t exist.

Why did Jesus need to be obedient? Wasn’t he already perfect? Could Jesus be perfect if he wasn’t obedient?

When Jesus went to the temple when he was 12 years old, who was he obedient to first? First, he was obedient to God, then because he was obedient to God, he also chose to be obedient to his earthly parents.

“Obedience is a choice. It is a choice between our own limited knowledge and power and God’s unlimited wisdom and omnipotence.” -Elder L. Tom Perry, April 2014 General Conference Address.

He made man free—and then gave him the Commandments to keep him free.” – Cecil B DeMille
